The 59th Annual Grammy Awards will take place on Sunday, February 12th on CBS. In the category of Album of the Year, there’s no surefire winner, which makes this year more exciting than usual. We’ll take a look at all the nominees and what their chances are for ultimate Grammy success.
Adele – 25
Why it will win: There are few artists who have been as impactful on the music industry in recent years as Adele. Not only is she coming off of the Album of the Year-winning success of 21, she also has the bragging rights of 25 being the best-selling album of both 2015 and 2016.
Why it won’t win: Adele is facing arguably much tougher competition than she did in 2012 when 25 won. She’s a front-runner, but it’s less certain this time around.
Beyonce’s – Lemonade
Why it will win: Beyonce’s statement on infidelity mixed with political commentary was one that captured the cultural zeitgeist like no other mainstream album did this year.
Why it won’t win: It’s a defiant, outspoken album which could work against it in terms of Grammy success. More conservative voters might lean towards Adele.
Justin Bieber – Purpose
Why it will win: Everyone loves a good comeback story, right? After a couple years of misbehaviour, Justin Bieber returned more mature and focused with a more adult sound.
Why it won’t win: Despite the album’s positive reception, Bieber still has a lot of work to do in terms of convincing people to take him seriously. This is a good first step, but it probably won’t net him the most coveted of Grammys.
Drake – Views
Why it will win: Drake had the “biggest” album of the year with Views, a feat no doubt helped by blockbuster singles such as “One Dance.” Drake’s Views also dominated the rap category, as he received a total of five nominations this year.
Why it won’t win: Despite its commercial success, the reception for Views was much more muted compared to Drake’s other albums. Many would argue that he would be much more deserving of this award for “Take Care” or “Nothing Was the Same.”
Sturgill Simpson – A Sailor’s Guide to Earth
Why it will win: The most surprising name to appear on this list, the Kentucky singer-songwriter’s album has been hailed as one of the best country albums in recent years.
Why it won’t win: Simpson doesn’t have the name recognition of his competition. Getting this nomination and exposure should be huge, but for now, he’ll have to be patient.
We see this race as ultimately being between Adele and Beyonce and would not be surprised if either of them won. Ultimately, we’re going to go with Adele as our predicted winner. But who knows? Anything could happen.
