Serena Jameka Williams has won her 19th grand slam title and her sixth title at the Australian Open.
The world number one won 6-3, 7-6 against Maria Sharapova. “I have to congratulate Maria, she played a wonderful match and she really pushed me,” Williams said.
“She played so well and gave me a great final not only for the fans, but for women’s tennis. I’m really honoured to play her in the final.” It’s the 16th time she has beaten the Russian in a game.
At 33, Williams remains the unbeatable champion of women’s tennis and is three wins away from becoming the greatest Grand Slam winner of all time – she has already beaten Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert but Steffi Graf still remains the one to beat.
