Professor Yemi Osibajo was selected last night to be the running mate for General Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the presidential election next year.
According to reports, the party’s top guns consciously rejected a muslim-muslim combination and selected Osibajo because they strongly felt a mixed religious government (Christian/Muslim) will be more favourable when they hit the polls in February.
Others that were rumoured to be in the running to pair with Gen Buhari included Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers and Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo among others.
55-years-old Osibajo is a law professor and former Attorney-General of Lagos state, he is a senior partner at SimmonsCooper Partners, an author, a senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN), a christian and senior pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG).
He attended Igbobi College in Lagos, the University of Lagos, Nigeria (LLB, 1978) and the London School of Economics (LLM, 1980), practiced for a while before he was admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of Nigeria in 1979.
